“I just wondered how things were put together” – Claude Shannon

krya comes from the same root as the Indonesian word karya, which means work, or something made.

What I like about the word is that a karya doesn’t have to be something you can point at. Code and products are karya, but so are a theory, a poem, or an idea. Computer science was a karya of mathematicians long before it was an industry, and that abstract side is the part I care about, the ideas underneath and why they hold.

I’ve worked as a software engineer for about ten years, which is long enough to know how systems get built and still be curious about why they work at all. That’s mostly where my head is, computer science, mathematics, and the reasoning behind software. I also write about other things I like, usually physics, economics, or history.

This is where that writing lives. Articles, opinions, notes on tools, whatever I’m thinking through. Some of it is technical, some isn’t. It reflects what I understood when I wrote it, and I’ll probably disagree with parts of it later.

I write as Isaac Shannon. I keep my real name private, so a pseudonym fits. The name is Isaac Newton and Claude Shannon, two people whose curiosity I’ve always admired.

AI transparency

Everything I publish here is written by a human, either me or a contributor credited on the post. I don’t put out AI-generated articles.

Since English isn’t my first language, I do use AI to clean up my grammar and fix sentences that come out clumsy. It changes the wording, not the point I’m making. If a post got that kind of help, I’ll say which tool I used and what for, in the header under How AI was used.

The code behind the site is another story. I built it with Cursor on top of the RFCish theme, and I was happy to let it write the parts I didn’t feel like learning.
